Over a century ago, the mining town of Abandon was, well, abandoned. Simultaneously telling the story of what happened on that fateful Christmas in 1893. Abandon also tell the tale of a group in the present wanting to find out what happened all those years ago.
The story occurring in 1983 is full of bright and vibrant characters. Crouch brings alive a mining town in the middle if winter. Providing a good contrast of the state of Abandon in the present. When our present day group arrive at Abandon, all at first seems well. However, with bad weather is drawing in, a decision is made to stay in Abandon. A decision that causes the past to start affecting the present.
Surprisingly for me, I found the story of Abandon in 1893 to be much more interesting than the story set in the present. In contrast, much of the story set in the present was frustratingly unbelievable. The present was full of too many coincidences. Too many lucky escapes.
I appreciate that to create the story set in the present, there did need to be certain happenings. But the plot felt overly contrived. It was amazing the way that the main character managed to live through a series of dangerous events and injuries. Sometimes what happened felt so far fetched that I gave up really caring about what was happening in the present. I continued to read Abandon for what happened in 1893. Luckily, much of the book was set in 1893!
If the story set in the present had been as enjoyable as that set earlier, Abandon would have been a 4 star read. As it is, this was a 3 star read, but definitely worth the effort!
****Disclaimer – I purchased Abandon by Blake Crouch. This is my honest review and all opinions are my own****
