Atlanta Burns has had a pretty crappy time of it, life in her particular run down corner of the world has sucked, and culminates in shooting her mom’s boyfriend. In. The. Balls. To be fair, he more than deserved it. Anyway, now she has helped herself, she’s ready to help others. Especially if bullies are involved, only problem is that every single time Atlanta tries to help, things get worse. But when you’re backed in a corner, you have to fight your way out, and boy has Atlanta got all the fight!
What do I think of Atlanta Burns?
Wowee Atlanta Burns is like Veronica Mars on steroids! What a brilliant character Chuck Wendig has written, full of spark and life. She tumbles off the page! This book is very much a “coming of age” novel, Atlanta finding herself and learns to slowly let other in. Because of this the book could easily get labelled in the “Young Adult” category but I don’t want to pigeonhole this book, those of us older than the YA category will enjoy it too. And lets be honest, this book tackles some really difficult subject matters, pedophilia, drug use and bullying to name but three. On Amazon this is marketed as a YA book, but it will be down to individual parents to decide if this is appropriate for their children.
Atlanta Burns is a no messing, vigilante teen but with a heart of gold, so in some respects she is an excellent role model, the drug taking and drink though, not so much! I personally liked the act that Atlanta is flawed, it makes her so much more real. The main thing I want to stress is, yes, this book deals with some very difficult themes, but the author has done so by creating a set of characters that are so believable you are rooting for them all the way through. In my head I was cheering them on “you can do this, come on, it’ll be OK!” Hmm was it OK? No it just get getting worse and worse, as the hole Atlanta and her friends had dug themselves in expanded at the rate of a Florida sink hole.
As you can tell, I really, really enjoyed this book. It managed to successfully deal with complex subject matters but still create a rip roaring , flying from the seat of your pants story. Atlanta Burns is one feisty girl, and as a teenager I would have loved to have her as a friend. Suffice to say it’s a fantastic read. Go out, get on the web, get this book today – you wont regret it! A definite 5 star read.
