City of Mirrors is a book I have been waiting to read a very long time. The first book in the trilogy, The Passage was a story that haunted me, so desperate was I to know what dates befell the characters. With the release of The Twelve, yes some questions were answered but more questions were raised. And do began the lengthy wait for the final piece of the puzzle, The City of Mirrors.
The book helpfully starts with a recap of the action from the first two parts of the trilogy. I however, re-read both of the earlier book in preparation for the release of The City of Mirrors, however I will be honest and admit that the first two books affected me that strongly, the stories have been laser etched into my memory.
Personally I love the way that Justin Cronin writes, it is so beautifully executed that he paints pictures with words. There is no unnecessary rushing to tell the story or get to the end. Instead Cronin shows us individual what each of the main characters have been getting up to in the preceding three years since the end of The Twelve. I found this a perfect way to ease back into this world. It felt like Cronin was giving these characters the proper amount of respect. It allowed the reader to feel like they were meeting with old friends.
In other reviews I’ve read there have been comments regarding the time that Cronin takes to divulge the origins of Zero. For me, I found this deeply interesting. I find a well written back story in novel to be very rewarding.
I’m a fairly fast reader, but with The City of Mirrors I read slowly. Savouring and stretching it out. As badly I wanted to know what was going to happen at the end, I even more wanted this book to last forever. I spent longer reading this book, but I’m glad I did.
The end of this book was so much more than I could have ever wished for. In fact, it was perfect. And it brought me to tears. What an astonishing ending to this most amazing of trilogies. 5 stars is not enough.
****Disclaimer – I purchased this book with my own money. This is my honest review****
