As I begin to write to a review of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, I realised that it is a somewhat difficult task. The main reason being that not only do I not want there to be any spoilers whatsoever, I really don’t want to give much of the story away at all. Its really of case of wanting the reader to be able to read the story as a brand new treat! The other issue is that this is not a novel, and therefore cannot be reviewed as such.
Instead, I am going to review the story without, fingers crossed, giving too much of the game away. I think that most readers interested in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are aware that the story is set 19 years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Harrows. I think setting it this far in the future does allow the story to take its own twists and turns. However the story found in the previous 7 books will always be having an impact on any story set in the Harry Potter universe.
The script brings the readers a interesting set of characters, both new and old. I am delighted to read what happened to the most beloved of characters. Harry, Hermione and Ron lived as part of my world since reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I jumped at the opportunity to read what had become of them in the “ever after”. However the script is so much more than these three characters, and this had the effect of making me enjoy it even more.
The script was extremely well written, but I would expect nothing more. The one think I find to rely upon is the standard of J. K. Rowlings’ writing. Rowling writes exceedingly readable books, and now writes beautifully readable scripts. I found the lines so well written further description was unnecessary. The words painted a story full of depth and interest. I saw how well this play must come across when performed.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child exceeded all of my expectations. I read this in one sitting, as I could not put it down. I can, however confess to being disappointed when it came to the end. Any fan of Harry Potter should read this. Do not let the fact that this is a script put you off. This is a 5 star read.
